Canvassing for Bernie: some random thoughts.

Today was my first day of knocking on doors for Sen. Sanders.  Unfortunately, most people weren’t home.  I heard “he’s at work” more often than not.  Great, people have jobs.

The operation is targeting young people (duh, I’m not exactly giving away cutting edge strategery here) and young people seem to move frequently without updating their voter registration.  “He’s moved” was the second most common response I got.  Two were serving with the military overseas.

The area I worked in is a mosaic of 1980s/1990s McMansion subdivisions with a few much older houses, trailers, and barely habitable shacks.  There are a lot of Republicans and since there’s no partisan registration in this state the VAN database doesn’t have thorough data to weed them out.

There’s a crazy number of people my age living with their parents.  Even if the campaign is deliberately targeting younger folks, it’s still a shitload of people… I mean, every block. Even though they all seem to be working, they apparently can’t afford to move.

Even the Republicans I talked to were nice.  I didn’t argue with them.  If they were amenable to reason, they wouldn’t be Republicans.  I told them to enjoy the nice weather.

I’m gonna try again Saturday, the weather will be worse but hopefully I’ll actually catch people at home. What time do the sportsball games start?
